Sher Shah Suri Coin Sold For INR 40,000

Sher Shah Suri was the sultan of Delhi; he founded the Sur dynasty in Indian and was the first ruler of Sur dynasty. His original name was Farid. He got the title ‘Sher Khan’ after he killed a Tiger. Sur dynasty was the Afgan family that ruled the northern India from 1540-1556.

Sher Shah Suri defeated the Mughal Empire Humayun first in Battle of Chausa (1539) and then in Battle of Kannauj (1540), hence he became a powerful ruler and establishes Sur Dynasty.

Sher Shah Suri issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. As his empire expanded, he issued the coins with the name of the mint which he had brought under his control; but mintless coin which he issued in silver and copper are also found.

One of silver half-rupee of Jahanpanah type was sold for INR 40,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery in an auction held on 11th December 2015. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Sher Shah Al Sultan Khallada Allah Mulkahu, date 949, King’s name is written in Devnagari within the square, with ‘Jahanpanah’ written in the left margin. The reverse of the coin reads as ‘Shahada and Al Sultan Ad Adil’ within a square, Caliph’s names written in the margin.
