2017-03-09 Thu
An 1875-CC Trade dollar with Asian merchant clear chop marks on both sides graded EF-40, Chop Mark was sold for $676 at Heritage’s auction by Ira and Larry Goldberg Auctioneers on 12th February. Chop marks are mostly seen on Trade dollars adding to the historical significance and interest among collectors.Trade dollars were majorly used in Asia and were minted by the United States between 1873 and 1878. Since silver value kept on changing in those days, the experiment wasn’t very successful. Proof-only issues can be found today, dated 1879 - 1885.
These coins were used in China and when the value of silver dropped, the dollar also lost its worth. Chop marks were made by Asian merchants for identification and testing purposes.
