Sher Shah Suri Coin Sold for INR 10,000

Sher shah Suri was the founder of the Sur Empire in North India. He belonged to a Pashtun dynasty of Afghanistan. The real name of Sher Shah Suri was Farid. He was given a title ‘Sher Khan’ after he killed a tiger. His father was small Afgan Jagirdar near Jaunpur.

Sher Shah Suri issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. As his empire expanded, he issued the coins with the name of the mint which he had brought under his control; but mintless coin which he issued in silver and copper are also found.

One of his silver rupee, minted in Malot, which weighs around 11.3g, was sold for INR 10,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery in an auction held on 11th December 2015. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Farid Al-Dunya Wa’l Din Khallada Allah Mulkahu wa Sultanahu’ within a circle and the king’s name ‘Shah Sultan Sher Khallada Allah Mulkahu wa Sultanahu’ and date 949 written in margin. The reverse of the coin reads as ‘Shahada within Circle and ‘Abu Bakr Umar Uthman Ali Al-Sultan al-adil’ with mint name Malot in the margin.
