Ghana Issues New Commemorative Banknotes

A commemorative GH?5.00 banknote was issued by Ghana to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Bank of Ghana which was established on 4th March 1957. They will be released for circulation on 7th March 2017. The note shines when tilted and are smaller in size for making daily transactions more convenient. It comes with modern security and informational features. The new notes will be used along with old GH?5.00 note.

The note features a portrait of the famous educationist and missionary Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey who worked in Gold Coast (18 October 1875 – 30th July 1927). Tactile markings help visually impaired identify the denomination along with an intaglio portrait. The reverse features a seaborne oil-drilling rig in the Tweneboa, Enyenra, Ntomme (TEN) offshore field. Gold bars, the cocoa pod, and the coconut etc are also depicted.

The notes also come with a Quick Response (QR) Code which can be read by a mobile phone application. Using the application you get redirected to a special Bank of Ghana website that explains details of national banknotes.
