Counterfeit Banknotes in Bendigo, Australia

2017-02-25 Sat

Recently, a fake $50 note and $20 note have been found in Bendigo, Australia. The police officials are suspecting that more fake notes could be circulating in the area. These notes were made of paper instead of plastic and remained undetected until they are deposited in banks. The Reserve Bank of Australia has warned the general public that a fake note would be thinner or thicker than usual ones. Original notes would be difficult to tear and would spring back when crumbled.

The notes should show a coat of arms and diamond shapes inside a small circle forming a seven-pointed star when held up against the light. The white image on the transparent window should not be easily rubbed off. The window features a wave pattern on the $10 note, and the value of the banknote on the $20, $50 and $100 notes.

The RBA also suggested that suspect banknotes shouldn’t be used and should be kept in envelopes. People who receive a fake note have the right to not accept them. The police also stated that those who used fake notes for a transaction could have themselves received it from someone else.
