Gujarat Sultan’s Coin Sold for INR 65,000

Shams Al-Din Muzaffar II was the sultan of Gujarat. He was son of Mahmud Beghara. His real name was Khalil Khan; he succeeded his father under the title Shams Al Din Muzaffar II. Gujarat Sultanate was founded by Zafar Khan of Muzaffarid dynasty in the early 15th century.

Shams-Al-Din Muzaffar II issued coins in gold, silver, copper and billon. Gold coins issued by him were struck for longer period. His gold coin weighs around 11.4-11.6g, but some of his dateless coins are also found which weighs around 12.6g. Billon coin issued by him was struck for a short time. Copper coins issued by him weighs around 11-11.2g, but some of his copper coin with weight 9.2-9.4g and 8.3g are also found.

One of his gold tanka, minted in Muhammadabad, which weighs around 11.4g was sold for INR 65,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 8th December 2013. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Al-Mu’ayyad Bi-ta’yid Al-Rahman Shams Al-Dunya Wa’l Din Abul Nasr’ and reverse side of the coins reads as ‘Muzaffar Shah Bin Mahmud Al- Sultan’ with date 925; date 925 is written at the bottom. This is a rare coin.
