Bengal Sultan’s ‘Joint Issue Coin’

Ghiayas Al Din Bahadur Shah was a Sultan of Bengal. He was son of Shamsuddin Firoz Shah of Bengal Kingdom of Lakhnauti. Ghiayas Al Din Bahadur Shah ruled Bengal Sultanate as an independent kingdom during AD 1322-1324 and as a governor during AD 1324-1328.

Ghiayas Al Din Bahadur Shah sat on the throne in the year AD 1322. After ruling successfully for two years; in the year AD 1324, he lost the battle; Ghiyath al Din Bahadur shah was captured and taken to Delhi as prisoner.

In the same year, Muhammad bin Tughluq; son of Ghiyath-ud-din Tughluq released him and made him governor of East Bengal in Sunargaon.

Ghiayas Al Din Bahadur Shah issued coins in gold and silver. Silver tankas issued by him are similar to preceding issue from Bengal. Gold tankas issued by him are a contemporary issue of Muhammad Bin Tughluq.

His silver tanka; ‘joint issue coin’ reads as ‘Duriba Bi-Amir Al-Wathiq Billah Muhammad Bin Tughluq Shah’ on the obverse side and ‘Al Sultan Al-Mu’azzam Ghiyath Al-Dunya Wa’l Din Abul Muzaffar Bahadur Shah Al-Sultan Bin Sultan’on the reverse side. This coin was minted in Hadrat Sunargaon; weight of the coin is around 10.3g. Date on the coin is not clearly visible. This coin is extremely rare.
