Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s First Meeting at CCAC

2017-02-22 Wed

On 15th February a small public meeting was held by The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) to discuss themes for the 2019 America the Beautiful Quarters program and the Office of Strategic Services Congressional Gold Medal. The latest member, Basketball legend and philanthropist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar attended the meeting for the first time.

The five entries for the 2019 America the Beautiful Quarters program include Lowell National Historical Park (Massachusetts), American Memorial Park (Northern Marianas Islands), War in the Pacific National Historical Park (Guam), San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (Texas), and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho. A presentation on each coin, critical information and context was conducted.

Possible themes for Lowell National Historical Park included mill girls, the canal system, the water tower, the mill building, the city seal and the clock tower. Mottos that were considered include “Spindle City”, “City of Spindles”, “Mill City”, “All with Expectancy”, “American Industry” and “Art Is the Handmaiden of Human Good” (the city’s motto). People who lived and worked there and the importance of industry and the Industrial Revolution to American life would be the focus of the design.

Similar discussions took place about all the other coins as well.
