Part V of the “Masterpieces of United States Coinage” series of auctions from the collection of D. Brent Pogue will be offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries and Sotheby’s on 31st March at the Evergreen Museum and Library, Baltimore.

This would be the largest offering in terms of numbers, featuring early American copper cents and half cents. Large cents have had a tradition from the 1850s to today. One of the coins offered is a Mint State 67 red and brown, 1794 Liberty Cap cent which is the finest known example of the “Apple Cheek” variety. It was sold for $352,500 at an August 2014 Heritage auction. At the upcoming auction, the coin has an estimated value of $200,000 to $250,000.

An 1852 Coronet cent graded MS-65 red and brown is estimated at $1,000 to $1,500. An 1839 Seated Liberty, No Drapery example graded MS-66 is estimated at $2,000 to $3,000. An MS-65 1858 Seated Liberty dime with “vibrant electric blue, gold and amber iridescence” is estimated at $1,500 to $2,000.

A Dexter Class I Original 1804 Draped Bust dollar graded Proof 65, one of the eight known Class I Original strikings have an impressive estimate of $3 million to $5 million. An MS-65 1801 Draped Bust dollar with a sharp strike and deeply reflective mirrors, a specimen example, has an estimate of $200,000 to $250,000.
