Australian Writers Celebrated on Banknotes

2017-02-17 Fri

Australia released new $10 note similar to their new $5 note that was released in September 2016. The $10 note features the top-to-bottom clear window, a clear patch with a rolling colour effect, and a "tactile" feature for the vision impaired. Special security features include complex holograms visible only under UV light.

The $10 note celebrates famous writers like Dame Mary Gilmore and AB 'Banjo' Paterson, who have contributed to Australian heritage. A pen nib is featured on clear windows and excerpts of their poetry are featured in microprint. The notes also depict elements of Australian culture like a horseman, billabong, and a homestead referring to Paterson's classic poem The Man From Snowy River.

A small yet clearly defined excerpt from 'Banjo' Paterson's The Man from Snowy River is also depicted. Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson was a poet and ballad writer who was born in rural New South Wales. Dame Mary Gilmore stood up for many social and economic reforms, such as votes for women, old-age and invalid pensions. He wrote prose and poetry mostly based on outback and rural themes. The banknote features Gilmore's No Foe Shall Gather Our Harvest in microprint
