2016-02-15 Mon
NGC has certified the only known example of a 1982-D bronze Small Date cent. The unique coin was discovered in November by a Minnesota collector, among a hoard of bronze cents that he had collected. After copper, bronze cents were introduced and after that, brass-plated zinc cents were minted. The bust, lettering and date were all modified. Seven varieties were issued in 1982. The 1982-D Small Date Bronze cent certified by NGC was never found before. It has been termed as a mint error struck with a leftover planchet, and it was not intended for circulation. The 3.08-gram coin is within the tolerable weight limits for bronze cents. The coin was graded NGC AU 58 and named “discovery coin.”
