Royal Mint’s Royal Error!

2017-02-07 Tue

The Royal Mint struck almost 3,500 £2 coins in 2015 with a major alignment error. The error was caused due to the wrong orientation of the dies while minting the coins. The Queen’s effigy is rotated about 150 degrees on the obverse, almost upside down, with respect to the Britannia design on the reverse. These kinds of error coins issued by Great Britain are very rare to find. The country has a dedicated website called “Change Checker” which tells the common public about these error coins.

Apart from that, did you know that £2 coins are also called as “beer tokens” as many pints of beer in Britain cost £2!
