Legendary Soviet Gymnast, Olga Korbut To Auction Her Olympic Medals

The famous 61-year-old Soviet gymnast, Olga Korbut will be offering her collection of Olympic medals at Heritage Auctions on 25th and 26th February.

Three gold medals and two silver medals from the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games and the 1976 Montreal Summer Games, along with other awards before and after she received Olympic medals will be offered.

The 1972 Munich, team gold was given to Soviet women’s gymnastics team. The 175 grams medal features Victory holding a laurel wreath and palm branch before the Colosseum. The mythological Roman twins Castor and Pollux are depicted on the reverse.

Other medals include the 1972 Munich, individual floor exercise, gold, the 1972 Munich, individual uneven bars, silver, the 1976 Montreal, team gold, 1976 Montreal, individual balance beam, silver etc.

The Soviet women’s gymnastics team won 8 gold medals in a row from the 1952 Helsinki Games to the 1980 Games in Moscow. The Soviet boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Games. But they won again at Seoul in 1988, and as a post-Soviet “Unified Team” in 1992 at Barcelona.
