USA elects its 1st President and Vice President

2017-02-04 Sat

4th February 1789, George Washington is unanimously elected by the Electoral College as the first president of America. Till date he remains the only president to be unanimously elected by the Electoral College.

George Washington was the commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was a major driving force behind the establishment of USA and for his efforts he came to be known as the "Father of the country." He also presided over the 1787 convention that drafted the United States Constitution.

He was re-elected as the president and repeated this notable feat on the same day in 1792. John Adams, who later became the 2nd President in 1797, was elected vice president in both of Washington’s terms.

“I walk on untrodden ground. There is scarcely any part of my conduct which may not hereafter be drawn in precedent.”

And truly his presidency left many precedents such as the cabinet system, the inaugural address, and the title Mr. President. As a Father of the Country, Washington strove hard to unite the nation and oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government.

George Washington appears on the one-dollar bill since 1869 – just seven years after the first dollar bill was printed. The first releases of United States Post Office were two postage stamps in 1847, and they depicted George Washington, along with Benjamin Franklin on these premier issues. In 2007 George Washington Presidential Dollar coins in different striking standards were released.
