New 20 and 100 shekel bill designs featuring famous Hebrew poetesses were introduced by the Bank of Israel on Tuesday. Former Prime Minister Golda Meir was featured on an Israeli banknote - the 1985 NIS 10 bill. The circulation of this note was terminated in the 1990s. She was also featured on the 10,000 shekel bill before the new Israeli shekel was introduced in 1985. Many other women were featured on the Israeli pound before it was replaced by the shekel in 1980.

Rachel Bluwstein is depicted on the new red coloured NIS 20. The reverse will feature words from her poem “Kinneret, which translates to the Sea of Galilee along with a picture of the lake. One of Israel’s most celebrated poets, Leah Goldberg will be featured on the orange coloured new NIS 100. The reverse features a deer with words from her poem “White Days.”

The new notes will complete the third series of notes of the new Israeli shekel and will be released for circulation by the end of this year.
