2017-02-03 Fri

Did you know that the present Queen of England, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is the longest reigning Monarch of the British history?

On 9 September 2015, The Queen surpassed the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

She became queen on February 6, 1952, and was crowned on June 2, 1953. She has held the throne for many long years and has reigned through enormous social change and development. This 6th of February in 2017 she will be celebrating 65 successful years on the throne.

To celebrate the Sapphire Jubilee of her reign and to commemorate this unique event in the British history, The Royal Mint has issued commemorative coins. The Sapphire Jubilee series of coins are struck in metals, like cupronickel, gold, and silver to different strike standards and weights.

The obverse has the portrait of the Queen and the reverse was created by a Royal Mint coin designer Glyn Davies. The reverse features the crown along with a quotation “My whole life, whether it be long or short, devoted to your service” from the Queen’s 21st birthday speech.
