Tipu Sultan’s Two Paisa Sold for INR 25,000

Tipu Sultan was born on 20 November 1750 at Devanahalli. He was named Tipu Sultan after a saint Tipu Mastan Aulia of Arcot. He is also known as Tiger of Mysore or Tipu Sahib. He was the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore.

Bahaduri Pagoda, Half-Pagoda, and Fanams issued by him are copied from Ikkeri Nayaks. Muhammad Shahi Pagoda issued by him is inspired from Mughal Pagoada. Copper coins issued by him with the elephant on the obverse were minted at Seringapatam during the last two year of his reign. Copper coin which he issued during last four year of his reign bears the first four letter of Persian alphabet; ‘Alif’ ‘Be’ ‘Pe’ and ‘Te’. This coins were minted in Seringapatam (Pattan), Nagar, and Gooty.

One of his copper ‘two paisa’ also known as ‘Othmani’ or ‘Mushtari’ minted at Dar-al-Sultanate Pattan which weighs around 22.6g was sold for INR 25,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery in an Auction held on 10th April 2016. Obverse side of the coin bears image on an elephant facing towards right, a flag with Persian letter ‘Be’ is placed above the elephant. Reverse side of the coin is inscribed as ‘Zarb Dar-ul-Sultanate Pattan Mushtari Sanah Mauludi 1225. This coin is very rare.
