Final “First Spouse Series” Coins are Rarer

2016-01-28 Thu

The First Spouse gold $10 coin series ended in 2016 with the Nancy Reagan issue. Out of all the coins in the series, the Uncirculated 2014-W Grace Coolidge First Spouse gold $10 coin has become a rarity. Only 1,949 of these coins were sold. The first coins in the series featuring Martha Washington and Abigail Adams fared well. The Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty coin was the most popular one, being a widower at time of his presidency.

A 30 percent premium was charged. The sale if these coins almost halted in the secondary market when the gold pricing increased from 2009 to 2011. This made First Spouse coins an expensive series to collect. Looking at the trend in demand, the mintage limit was reduced to almost 4,000 in 2008 for Uncirculated coins and 7,000 for proofs. In 2009, mintage limit reduced to 3,500 for Uncirculated and coins and 5,000 for Proof coins.

From 2013 through 2016 the number reduced to 2,000 for Uncirculated coins and 2,500 for Proofs. The limit was raised for popular coins like Jackson, Van Buren and Buchanan and Jacqueline Kennedy coins. Collecting these coins with such low mintages would be a good decision.
