Muhammad Bin Farid’s Coin Sold for INR 11,000

Delhi sultanate was a Muslim kingdom based mostly in Delhi; which was spread over part of the Indian subcontinent for almost 320 years. Five dynasties had ruled Delhi sequentially; Mamluk dynasty, Khalji dynasty, Tughluq dynasty, Sayyid dynasty and Lodi dynasty.

Muhammad bin Farid was the sultan of Delhi, he was from Sayyid dynasty. Sayyid dynasty ruled from AD 1415 to 1451. This dynasty was founded by Sayyid Khizr Khan, Muhammad bin Farid was the third ruler of Sayyid dynasty and he was a nephew of Mubark Shah.

Muhammad bin Farid issued coins in gold, silver, copper and billon. During his reign weight standard of all metals increased slightly. One of his silver tanka, which weighs around 11.3g was sold for INR 11,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 22nd April 2016. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Al Sultan Al Azam Abul Muhamid Muhammad Shah Bin Farid Shah Hadrat Shah Al Sultan’ and reverse of the coin reads as ‘Fi Zaman Al-Imam Amir Al-Muminin Khulidat Khilafatuhu’, the date on the coin is not clearly visible. This coin is very rare.
