National Girl Child Day!
2017-01-24 Tue
Like stardust on glittering wings,Girls are like dreams of magical themes.
Far from being treated as blessings, girls in India are still treated as a burden on the family. Their births still unwelcomed, their education still a secondary priority and their early marriages an easy escape from the social burden of having daughters.
In an attempt to raise awareness against such social malice and to create awareness campaigns to save the girl child, India has declared January 24th as National Girl Child Day in the year 2009!
Each year since 2009, this day sees a celebration of events which continues right up till March 8th which is the International Women’s Day. The purpose of this day is to make available more opportunities for girls and to fight against the gender inequality that is deep rooted in our country.
This inequality includes concerns such as a right to education/access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women, child marriage, etc. A focus of attention on the depleting female to male ratio, a stand on issues of female foeticide, domestic violence and malnutrition in children also are some of its objectives.
National Girl Child Day celebration was started by the Women and Child Development Ministry and a variety of events are organized all across the country to celebrate the girl child day to promote the girls’ position in the society.
Further going beyond these objectives, this year the government is acknowledging and congratulating the various achievements of the daughters who have made us proud! India Post on 5th February 2009 has released an INR 5 commemorative stamp which celebrates the National Girl Child Day!
Save the Girl Child! Save the Nation!
