Ugly Yet Expensive!

A not-so-good-looking 1652 Willow Tree shilling was sold for $170,375 on 5th January at Heritage’s FUN Platinum Night auction. The double-struck 1652 Willow Tree shilling is graded Mint State 62 by Professional Coin Grading Service with a green Certified Acceptance Corp. sticker. Each of these coins was hammered separately many times to maintain its technical weight. This deformed the coins like the oval one offered at the auction with unreadable obverse and reverse date on.
The same coin was earlier sold at another auction for $164,500. The striking is messy and the tree looks like a bramble bush. This goes to show that some coins are valuable even though they are ugly!
