Coins of Ghiyath Al-Din Ahmad III of Gujarat

Ghiyath Al-Din Ahmad III (AH 961-968; AD 1553-1560) was Sultan of Gujarat. He was the son of Nasir Al-Din Mahmud III. He issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. Gold coins issued by him are rare while silver and copper coins issued by him are common. Most of the silver and copper coins issued by him were probably struck at Ahmadabad; some of his copper coins were also struck at Muhammadabad (Champaner).The legend on coins is spread on both sides. Legend on his coins reads ‘Al-Mutasim Billah Al Rahman‘ meaning, ‘he who relies on Allah, the merciful’.
One of his gold half tankas was listed for INR 1, 00,000-1, 25,000 at Todywalla Auction which was held in Nagpur on 26th January 2013. This coin weighs around 5.9g. The legend the coin reads as ‘Al-Mutasim Billah Al-Rahman Ghiyath Al-Dunya Wa-Al-Din Abul Muhamid’ on the obverse; and ‘Ahmad Shah Bin Mahmud Shah Al-Sultan’ on the reverse. This coin is very rare.
