A medical nanotechnology specialist in Bangalore named Rejani Krishnankutty has discovered that applying a microbiocidal silver nanoparticle coating on banknotes can help in keeping banknotes disinfected. He will be proposing this idea to the Indian government as well.
As per her studies, silver nanoparticle coating fights micro-organisms like Staphylococcus aureus, E coli and pseudomonas which infect notes. Silver has been used since many years to make jewellery, water storage vessels and medicinal applications due to its anti-microbial properties. She said that silver nanoparticles are more effective than silver applied in bulk and fights against at least 12 species of micro-organisms.
