New Native American $1 Coin Reverse Design Released

2017-01-17 Tue

The annual reverse design of the 2017 Native American dollar features the creator of the Cherokee language and statesman Sequoyah. Sequoyah could not read or write English but invented symbols representing the basic syllables in various combinations, to form a language. The language is used even today.

Other inscriptions include “Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation” in the Cherokee syllabary, $1, UNITED STATES of AMERICA, a seven-pointed star, and Sequoyah’s written words. The obverse features the “Sacagawea” design, introduced in 2000 along with the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, the year, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The Native American $1 Coin Program celebrates the important contributions made by Native American tribes and individual Native Americans to the history and development of the United States.
