Popular Mongolian Stamps

Mongolia lies between China and Russia and is known for its hot summers and very cold winters. This unique climate has led to its distinct landscapes like desert, mountain or steppe.

The country is sparsely populated with 30 percent of the population leading a nomadic lifestyle while 45 percent living in the capital city, Ulan Bator.

Mongolia was ruled by China on and off until the Russian Bolsheviks used the land as a buffer state against China in the 1920s. In 1990, the Soviet Union collapsed and Mongolia became independent.

Mongolia issued its first stamps in 1924. Topical collectors mainly from Russia and China have a great interest in collecting these stamps as the country has issued many topical stamps before and after the Communist period. A set of eight stamps issued in 1943 feature Mongolian people and scenes.
