Rivers of Netherlands on Stamps

2017-01-13 Fri

Linge River, the Drentsche Aa, and the Reest are featured on a series of three stamps issued by Netherlands. The Beautiful Netherlands series was introduced in 2005 dedicated to “local history, cultural wealth and scenic beauty.” 2017 stamps will be issued on 31st January in panes of five. The non-denominated stamps have the “1” mark indicating that the stamp pays the basic domestic rate (€0.78 as of Jan. 1).

The first stamp shows Fort Asperen, built along the Linge River in the 19th century. A portion of a map of the river is shown as well. The selvage of the pane features the larger map. An asterisk mark locates the fort along with a scale and a compass point.

A Saxon farmhouse is shown on the Drentsche Aa stamp. The Drentsche Aa is the last stream of the country which existed from centuries. It passes through a valley landscape of woods, heathlands, sand dunes and hayfields. You will also find historical dolmens, prehistoric burial mounds and ancient Saxon farms in its path.

The Reest stamp depicts a 19th-century church in Old Avereest. This small river lies between Drenthe and Overijssel.
