Elephant Seal on 2017 Titanium Coin Series

2017-01-13 Fri

The latest Titanium coin issued for South Georgia and Sandwich Islands Government by Pobjoy Mint features the Elephant Seal. The Southern Elephant Seal is one of the two surviving species of elephant seals, is the biggest pinniped and the largest Antarctic seal. These large seals make loud roaring noises during the mating season. Known for their inflatable proboscis, they are quick on land. Unlike other seals, they can stay on land for a longer time. The largest subpopulation is in the South Atlantic is found on South Georgia; the Falkland Islands and Valdes Peninsula in Argentina (the only continental breeding population).

As per official reports two of the three major populations are declining due to the reducing levels of the seal’s main food sources. Various organisations are undertaking different kinds of conservation efforts.

This New coin features a male and female Elephant Seal sitting on a beach. Since titanium reacts differently with every strike, each blue whale coin is unique.

The coins come in a special presentation pouch along with a Certificate of Authenticity. The mintage limit of the 10.00 g titanium coin is 7,500.
