The 2017 American Liberty gold $100 coin was released on 1st January in the Treasury Department’s Cash Room. The coin features Liberty as a young African American woman for the first time. The reverse features a flying American eagle.

The obverse design was known to the people but was not publicly released until now. A Mint brochure that was distributed at a closed administration portion of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee on 16th September revealed the designs. A test strike was also performed during the meeting.

The obverse design was approved by CCAC and the Commission of Fine Arts and it reflects the diversity of America’s population. Traditional Liberty portraits were related to ancient Europe.
