The decision has been taken based on a consumer requirements study over in 2016. A lot of people are forced to exchange higher denomination banknotes for smaller ones.

Now the motive is to have 6-10% of all notes to be 10 euro notes, 40-45% of the notes to be 20 euro notes and the rest to be 50 euro notes. They are also pushing online means of payment processes and are hinting at banning of high-denomination banknotes. Achieving this is on top priority as of now and all the changes need to happen in the next 24 months.
