The country Surinam has a population of about 570,000 and most of them live along Caribbean Sea coast. They belong to a mixed ethnicity of East Indian, Javanese, African, and Indian. The country is culturally a part of Caribbean and not the mainland South America.

Though Dutch is their official language, Sranan is a form of pidgin English which is commonly spoken. It was a part of the Netherlands and became independent on 25th November 1975. It still has close cultural and economic ties will the Netherlands.

The first stamps of Surinam were issued in 1873. Since independence, it is known for its topical stamps and Bird topical stamps with high production values. The set of three overprinted and surcharged Bird airmail stamps issued in March 1987 is very rare to find.
