2017-01-06 Fri
Five 2017-dated quarters commemorating national sites were released by US Mint on 5th January, making them the Mint’s first coins of the year! The set is priced at $14.95 and they contain Proof quality coins featuring:Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa
Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C.
Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri
Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty National Monument) in New Jersey
George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana
The reverses feature scenes from the above mentioned sites and the obverses feature a portrait of President George Washington. This particular series was introduced in 2010 and this year’s issues complete 36 out of the total 40 issues.
The Proof coins are struck at the San Francisco Mint and they bear the "S" mint mark. The blanks used in making Proof coins enter a burnishing mill where they are polished, washed, dried and manually fed into coining presses. Polished dies strike each blank multiple times for creating frosted designs on mirror-like backgrounds. The coins are placed in a protective lens, packaged in a special box along with a certificate of authenticity.
