Christmas Hangover: Santa Claus Notes
2017-01-03 Tue
A $5 note from a New York institution named the Saint Nicholas Bank features Santa Clause. Many such obsolete notes depict him. Experts state that many banks failed initially and wanted to build confidence among investors and customers. Another reason could be that the notes would be handed over to children to avoid redemption thus keeping the bank afloat.Images on a note from the Knickerbocker Bank tell a fact that Dutch settlers in New York imagined Santa to be much thinner. Bank of Milwaukee showed a frightening side of Santa. A $5 note from the Howard Bank of Boston featured the nice Santa with a gifts bag in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer.
After the Civil War, the US government started printing currency notes and these notes became obsolete.
