The Creator of an Era Featured by India Post

India Post has issued a special commemorative stamp on Samrat Vikramaditya on 22nd December 2016.

Emperor Vikramaditya was a renowned king who ruled in Ancient India. The second son of Ujjain’s King Gandharvasena, Vikramaditya was known as the great king and the creator of an Era. This legendary emperor of ancient India is recognized for his generosity, braveness, and patronage of students.

Vikramaditya established his rule by driving out Sakas from Malwa and adjoining areas. The tradition first started to celebrate this success, later went to take the name of the leader who made this happen i.e. Vikramaditya of Ujjain. It came to be known as Vikrama Samvat starting from 57BC.

There are a whole lot of legends about Vikramaditya, together with those in Baital Pachisi and Singhasan Battisi which glorifies Vikramaditya as an emperor. Hence, to commemorate such great king of Ancient India Post issued a special stamp.

This five rupee stamp shows an image of the king's statue in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
