Coins of Hasan Shah

Hasan shah (AH876-889; AD 1472-1484) was Sultan of Kashmir. He was son of Haidar Shah. He was a scholar and kind-hearted person. He was also addicted to drinking like his father Haidar Shah. Hasan Shah wanted his cousin, Fath Khan to succeed him after his death but, his minister Sayyid Mirak Hasan Baihaqi; placed Muhammad his eldest son on the throne after his death.

Hasan Shah issued coins in gold, silver, copper and lead. His gold and copper coins are very rare. Weight of his copper coin reduced during his later period of his reign. His gold dinars bear the legend “Nigin-i-Mulk Khatam-i-Sulaiman” meaning “Signet of the kingdom, Solomon’s Seal”. Lead coin lead issued by him is known as “Dvi Dinnari” or “Double Dinnar”

His silver Sasnu which weighs around 6 to7g was sold for INR 8,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery. The obverse of this coin reads as “Al-Sultan Al-Azam Hasan Shah” with the date 876 written within Double Square. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as “Kashmir” within the square.
