Part I: Liberia Issues Of The First Two Coins Of The Tiffany Art Series

In 2004, Liberia issued a unique coin backed by the Tiffany Glass and Decoration Company. This was followed by an in issue in 2005. What makes these issues unique when compared to other coins is the inlaid glass on silver.Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) was a leading artist in the Art Nouveau in the USA. He went on to establish the Tiffany Glass and Decoration Company which manufactured his special coloured glass invention. This glass has a translucence metallic effect. The technique to create this glass was patented and is manufactured only by Tiffany’s company.
In 2004 and 2005, Liberia issued glass and silver coins depicting typical Romanesque architecture as a part of the Tiffany Art series. The Tiffany Art series has a total of ten coins till 2015. The first two were issued by Liberia in 2004 and 2005 while the rest are issued by Palau, beginning from 2007.
Both Liberian issues have a face value of $10 and are made of .999 silver. The coins have an antique finish, weigh 2 oz each and measure 50 mm in diameter. Both coins have a mintage of 999 pieces and have a coloured Tiffany glass inlaid into the windows on each side.
