2016-12-13 Tue
A gold mohur from the Mughal Empire depicting signs of the Zodiac was sold for £120,000 at the St. James’s Auction on 30th November in London. The coin had a higher estimate value of £125,000 to £150,000 though.Issued in Agra by Muhammed Jahangir in 1619 the 10.94 grams coin features two carp fish on the reverse to indicate the sign of Pisces. Silver coins in the series are rarer than gold issues.
The zodiac series was created by Emperor Jahangir himself. The obverse features legends with the emperor’s titles and it does not depict the emperor like the usual tradition.
The coin has some wears but is otherwise declared to be Good Very Fine.
