Rare Doubled Die Varieties Found
2016-12-05 Mon
This Proof 1956 Lincoln cent has an impressive obverse doubled die with extra thickness on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and on the date. Only 3,000 examples of this rare variety exist.A 1940-D Jefferson 5-cent coin was submitted by Eric Axtell with a re-punched Mint mark and the earlier mintmark is slightly tilted. Split serifs make this a triple-punched Mint mark (D/D/D).
A 2016-P Roosevelt dime from Andrew Turnbull has a doubled die reverse as well on the upper right side of the centre olive leaf. Doubled dies on the Roosevelt dimes have not been reported since 1989. A 2016-D Roosevelt dime from Richard L. Hurley had a doubled die reverse as an extension of the upper bands into the field on the right.
