2016-12-03 Sat

On 29th November, Colombia issued new 2,000 peso notes. It is the fifth one of the new family, which will be circulated along with the old notes. Notes of other five denominations that are planned to be released include $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, and $100,000.

The obverse will feature an image of the painter Débora Arango who is renowned in Colombia for his modern art. The reverse will depict Caño Cristales, the river of five colours from Sierra de la Macarena.

The notes have been issued to improve security features. For the last 18 years, Colombian notes have been in circulation without any major design changes. Even though counterfeiting index is low in the country, upgrading the banknotes will improve public confidence in cash.

Security features include inks and security threads of different colours with colour changing and movement effects. Their varying sizes and touch-sensitive elements help the visually impaired to identify the notes easily.
