Old £1 Welsh Dragon Reverse Design on 2016 Silver £20 Coin

2016-12-02 Fri

A 2016 Brilliant Uncirculated .999 fine silver £20 Coin would be issued by the Royal Mint featuring the Welsh Dragon which is also found on the flag of Wales. The design was already used on £1 coins in 1995 and 2000 as part of a series depicting the four nations of the United Kingdom, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The reverse features Norman Sillman’s £1 reverse design and the obverse depicts Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Welsh dragon is symbolic to pride, ferocity and determination. Sculptor Sillman who trained at the Royal College of Art received his first Royal Mint assignment in 1958. His design was chosen from a drawing provided by the College of Arms as the best-fit option representing the Celtic legend and Welsh attitude.

The new commemorative coin is available at face value and is the third silver £20-for-£20 coin of 2016, in a series that began in 2013. The mintage limit of the £20 15.71 grams coin has not been stated. However, there is a restriction on the order limit which is three coins per household. The coins come in a colourful packaging which highlights a red dragon. Delivery would begin in August.
