Great Spy Gabrielle Petit on New Belgian Gold Coin

A new gold coin was released by Belgium honouring Gabrielle Petit (1893–1916) who sacrificed her life during the Great War as a spy for the British Secret Service. She was appointed by the British intelligence keep a track on the Imperial German troop movement, their numbers and locations.

The reverse depicts a picture of a statue dedicated to Gabrielle Petit in 1923. Other inscriptions include 1916, 2016, VERZETSHELDIN – HÉROÏNE DE LA RÉSISTANCE and GABRIELLE PETIT. The obverse features the text 100 EURO, the map of Europe, Belgique, Belgie, and Belgien and the mintmark of the new Belgian mint master.

The mintage limit of the €100 .999 gold 15.5 g Proof coin is 300. The coin is encased in a special package.

Gabrielle Petit was born in the small Walloon town of Tournai, in February 1893 to a simple working-class family. After her mother’s early death, Gabrielle was sent to a Catholic boarding school to complete her studies and learn a skill which will make her independent.
