Football Shaped Curved Coin By Canada!

2016-11-22 Tue

The Royal Canadian Mint has launched its first ever football-shaped curved coins. The shape of the Proof .9999 fine silver $25 coin and Proof .9999 fine gold $200 coins are such that they mimic the shape of an actual football!

The design also looks very authentic with the leather panels, “night stripes,” and laces that were a part of the manufacturing process but are now used to better grip.

Some believe that the first football’s shape 170 years ago was like the pig’s bladder from which they were made. Besides, they were difficult to inflate, which gave it the unique shape. This shape made it easier to carry and throw. The forward pass became popular in the early 1900s and since then the football was designed that way on purpose.

The obverse of the coin features Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II while the “lacing” and inscriptions appear on the reverse.

The mintage limit of the silver 31.66 grams coin is 8,500 pieces and can be purchased for $161.95 Canadian. The mintage limit of the 31.32 grams coin is 550 pieces and is valued at $2,899.95 Canadian. All coins come in special packaging!
