2016-11-19 Sat
1,000 coins from the English Civil War were found in Ewerby, Lincolnshire by a local treasure hunter named Steven Ingram. The coins were scattered in the soil with pieces of a pot that was used originally to store the coins. The hoard of coins has a net value of £34 which is almost double the annual salary of an infantry soldier during those days. From 1642 to 1649 many battles took place in Lincolnshire, like the 1643 Winceby one, where the royalists were defeated by the Parliamentarian army that included Oliver Cromwell.
Experts revealed that the coins were buried early in 1643 a few months after the war began. The coins belonged the reigns of Edward VI, Elizabeth I, Mary, James I, and Charles I and the hoard is the largest one found from that time in the county. Experts state that the coins might have been buried by a soldier who never came back after the battle. Several of the estates near the site were fined after the war for supporting the King.'
The hoard is being processed under the Treasure Act and a report is in the making.
