Bengal Sultan Sikandar Bin Ilyas (AH 758-792; AD 1357-1389) was the son of Shamsuddin Ilyas shah. He was the second Sultan of Bengal. He was also the second sultan of Ilyas Shah Dynasty. The full name of Sikandar Shah was Abul Mujahid Sikandar Shah.Sikandar Shah had struck his coin in gold, silver and copper. One of the most interesting fact of the Sikandar Shah’s coins is types and varieties. His coins are found in various designs and legends, from the plain designs to most artistic form.
This silver tanka is one of the examples of his artistic form. This coin was minted in Hadrat Firuzabad. The obverse of the coin reads as “Al-Wathiq Bi-tayid Al-rahman Abul Muhahid Sikandar Shah Bin Ilyas Shah Al-Sultan” within the center circle, and the name of four Caliphs “Al-Imam Al-Azam Wa Al Khalifat Al-mu azam” in the margin. On the reverse the coin reads as “Yamin Khilafat Allah Nasir Amir Al-Muminin Ghawth Al-Islam Wa Al-Muslimin Khallada Klilafatuhu” within scallop, the date is written in the margin in words.
