“He who regards all men as equals is religious”This was said by Guru Nanak dev who the first Guru of Sikhs, the founder of Sikhs way of life and belief. He was born in 1469 AD in Talwandi, today in Pakistan also known as Nanak sahib.
This first guru of Sikhs was said to be a poet whose composition won many hearts. His hymns of love and brotherhood spread like fragrance.
Today on Kartik Poornima the first guru of the ten Gurus of Sikhs was born. This day is celebrated as Guru Nanak Gurpurab also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti. On this day it is a custom to sing the hymns of Guru Granth Sahib (The Religious Scripture of Sikhs) thrice a day which last for three continuous days with the display of fireworks throughout.
To celebrate this auspicious event department of Posts and telegraphs issued a special stamp of 20 paisa denomination in 1969 to mark the 500th Birth anniversary of Guru Nanak sahib.
