Modern U.S. Coin Without the Designer’s Initials
2016-11-10 Thu
A 1966 Kennedy half dollar from a Special Mint Set is missing the FG designer's initials from Assistant U.S. Mint Engraver Frank Gasparro on its reverse which is generally located between the eagle’s tail feathers and the left leg. The coin is referred as “No FG” by collectors.Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties of U.S. Coins lists the 1966 and 1972-D No FG coins, but not the other dates. Even experts know that many dates are missing the initials, but are unaware of anyone who has assembled a list or collection of them.
Some experts state that this could be caused due to over-polishing the dies to extend their production life. Over abrasion will result in die scratches and Debris filled dies will leave a depression. These kinds of error coins are commonly found.
