Seahorses on New British Virgin Islands Coin

2016-11-01 Tue

On 28th October, British Virgin Islands issued titanium coins tinted with a turquoise colour, along with cupro-nickel and silver coins featuring the seahorse. The head and neck of the seahorse look like that of a horse. They have spiny armour, an upright posture, and a curled tail which they use to attach themselves to plants or coral while feeding. The word “seahorse” is given to 54 species found in shallow tropical and temperate waters around the world.

Seahorses have been featured on many mythical stories. Unlike other fishes, they are monogamous and are the only animal species in which the male gives birth.

This 2017-dated coin depicts an adult and a baby seahorse with their tails hooked around leaves. The turquoise titanium recreates the warm seas scene colourfully. The obverse features the common Pobjoy Mint portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. .

The mintage limit of the 1 Dollar Cupro-nickel 28.2 g Brilliant Unc coin is 10,000, that of the 5 Dollars Titanium 10 g Select Unc. Coin is 7,500 and that of the 10 Dollars .925 silver 28.2g Proof coin is 2,000.
