Shams Al-Din Ilyas Shah (AH 743-758; AD 1342-1357) was the Sultan of Bengal. He had conquered a large chunk of Bengal. He became the first ruler to rule Bengal for long period of time once the power of Delhi had begun to wane.He had struck coins in Gold and Silver. He had minted his coins from Firuzabad, (Al-Balad Firuzabad, Hadrat Firuzabad), Satgaon, Sunargaon, Hadrat Jalal Sunargaon. The engraving on the coin is little poor.
This gold half-Tanka which weighs around 5.5gm, minted in Al Balad Firuzabad was sold for INR 4, 50,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 7th November 2014. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as “Al-Sultan Al-Ghazi” and the reverse of the coin is inscribed as “Shams Al-Dunya Wa Al-Din” within the circle in the centre, the mint name is written in the margin. This is an Extremely Rare coin.
