Native American War Hero Tecumseh on Canadian Coin
2016-10-24 Mon
A Canadian coin honoured the Native American Shawnee war chief - Tecumseh on two 25-cent circulating coins that were issued in 2012. Even though he was born in present-day America, during the War of 1812, he assisted British colonialists to fight against the Americans. The coin was issued to observe the 100th anniversary of the War of 1812. One version of the coin features red accents. The result of the War of 1812 was clear only after the British bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore. In Canada, the war is celebrated as a victory for the British Colonialists and for the independence of the region that went on to later become Canada.
Tecumseh was one of the most important British allies because of his military knowledge. He led the war after collaborating with Maj. Gen. Sir Isaac Brock, First Nation warriors and British troops to win the historic Battle of Fort Detroit against the Americans.
Tecumseh fought for his people and his land for all his life. He unified many native tribes to fight against the Americans. The Indians lost against William Henry Harrison, the future American president, at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in northwest Ohio in 1794. Tecumseh died at the Battle of the Thames at Chatham, Ontario, on 5th October 1813.
