Thailand to Issue a Commemorative Coin in Memory of Their Late Monarch

The Treasury department of the Government of Thailand recently announced that a commemorative coin will be soon issued in memory of the Late HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, popularly known as King Rama IX Chakr. The noted 88-year-old king died last week due to prolonged illness. He was only 18 years old when he became the King of Thailand in the year 1946. He was the longest-serving king and the world’s longest-serving head of state.As per official reports, initial plans are being made for the release of the coin that would mark the cremation service of the king which would take place after the official year of national and court mourning. Many months would go into designing the coin and the final one would be selected by the Royal Family. The reverse will feature the royal crematorium. The obverse design could either include a portrait of the late king or his successor. 4 kinds of collector coins including 99% pure gold and silver pieces, and both small and large-sized bronze coins may be released. Mintage limit would depend on advance orders, and the lowest price for a coin will be 100 baht.
200,000 more of the cupro-nickel coins, 10,000 gold and 50,000 silver commemorative coins celebrating the 70th year of His Majesty’s reign were also issued due to high demand. 2,800,000 of the cupro-nickel coins had been already sold along with all the gold and silver coins before the king’s death. 3 to 4 million commemorative coins, in 24 different types linked to the late king are still available.
