Rare 1901 Taiwanese 50-yen Note Sold For Five Times its Estimate Value

Far Eastern banknotes grabbed the limelight at Dix Noonan Webb’s auction that was held on 3rd October in London. These notes were sold for a total of £397,122. A very rare 1901 Bank of Taiwan “Fifty Yen in Silver” note was sold for £48,000 which is almost more than five times its estimated value.

A 1953 $10 note issued by the Board of Commissioners of Currency in Malaya and British North Borneo, crossed its estimated value of £1,000 to £1,500 estimate and fetched £6,000. A similar $50 note was sold for £5,520. The estimate value of a 1901 $5 of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation was only £600 to £800, but it was auctioned for £5,760. Similarly, a Singapore 1970 $10 also had the same estimate price and was sold for £4,320.

A huge Iranian collection termed as “the property of a gentleman” was sold for a total amount of £48,444. A 1924 20-toman Persian note from this collection had an estimated price of £1,500 to £2,000 but was sold for £4,800.

Notes from the Commonwealth countries with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the British Caribbean notes etc were also among the favourite for many collectors.
